Babies and lactose intolerance

Carol Eiserman

Message 3 of 6 Previous Next

My mother had four children and everyone of us was lactose intolerant to varying degrees. I had two children, a son in 1981 and a daughter in 1983. While I was pregnant with both of them, I had morning sickness, all day, every day for the entire 9 months! It was so bad that I first lost 10 lbs. with each of them before beginning to put weight on. I was even on a medication back then called Benedectin, it was the only drug approved for severe cases of morning sickness like mine, but it was taken off the market shortly after I had my daughter. Anyway, when I drank milk, or ate any kind of dairy products, while I was pregnant, the fetus would get the hiccups so bad that they even hurt me after awhile. When each of my children were born, they were both allergic to whole milk and other dairy products. My son was put on a soy formula, and he did okay on it, but even with the soy, he did a lot of spitting up and throwing up. When my daughter was born, she could not even tolerate the soy formula and was on a powdered formula that had to be mixed with sterile water, called Nutramigen. She was on that until she was almost five years old. Even now, if she eats too much dairy throughout the course of one day, she will vomit at night. Unfortunately, she is also currently pregnant (that's a whole story in itself) and is experiencing the same thing I did with the fetus when she has too much dairy, which is very little. Usually, she will begin with the fetus having the hiccups, and then before long, she will end up in the bathroom, vomiting. I am pretty sure she will end up with a lactose intolerant baby, too. As for not being intolerant until the age of 3, that is just plain ridiculous! It certainly sounds to me like your baby is lactose intolerant. If you are not getting any help from your pediatrician, you could try another pediatrician, or you could try a doctor who specializes in allergies, since that is what the intolerance really is. I hope you are able to find some more help for your baby, and if there are any other questions, that you think I might be able to help you with, please feel free to contact me at: Carol620@webtv.net I look forward to hearing from you. Carol
