I am a nurse who had the surgery 5 years ago. Recovery was one month to six weeks. I was in hospital 11 days. Triple abx treatment for 10 days of my stay. I had a resection vs a colostomy (thank god).(ambulation and mobility) Immediately post op stood up to walk. Bad move Dont try on your own. Very painful.(pain control) Pain was a major factor. I was walking the next day post op. walking for hours to permote peristalsis. I had no bowel sounds for 5 to 7 days.(Blood clot pervention} lovenox was given to prevent clots as well as ted stockings, deep breatheing and coughing needs to be done routinely. I avoided due to pain. another mistake that I should have known better. I had a bad case of thrush due to the abx therapy.so mouth care and good assessment is essential.(skin integridity)assessment of sutures for infection. Urine out put was a concern due to decrease po intake so (fluid balance and electrolytes). (Depression) due to altered body image. Very nasty scar that developed keloids. I had it revised a year later. Ventral hernia post op was a complication. (education) needs to be assessed and knowledge deficit. so you can teach follow up care and what to expect. Nutrition and adding fiber. Bowel habits and constipation need to be discussed. I hope this helps you I am sorry for the scattered thoughts I just finished a 18 hour shift. You can e mail me if you need for further help or questions.
