Hate to discourage everyone with PMR, but my mother (now 82) has had PMR for approx. 15 yrs. Haven't heard of anyone having it that long. It started with aching in her shoulder (I suspected it was "triggered" from long term use of a poorly working kitchen faucet, which required unusual effort to turn on and which I almost pulled my shoulder muscle on when I tried it!) After much eval. and a couple of docs, PMR was diagnosed, and she did pretty well as long as she could stay on 20mg Prednisone. She and her docs kept trying to lower that, but things always got worse. She kept active with bowling, golfing and other exercise. Last Spring, however, she had to go to 60mg to find comfort. She was golfing last month on one of her better days, but now even 60mg is not working. Her doc keeps trying other meds to no avail, or worse, because of her reactions to them. She is now really miserable, uses a walker and/or wheelchair, and doesn't know where to turn. I also have a brother-in-law (60ish) diag. with PMR, which started in his upper legs. His doc suggested a daily spell in a hot-tub/sauna along with his Prednisone (6mg?). Seems to be doing fine! Would love to hear from anyone with long term PMR, or if anyone knows of anyone who can help my Mom. I'm going to try to get her to go to the Mayo clinic in Minn. where there are some docs with "special interest" in PMR. Has anyone been there? Please email me if you have any info. thanks Diane (dshakal@pacbell.net)
