My husband had the same problem, and was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. He is still having much pain & swelling even after surgery in Feb. He's taking glucosamine also, as well as methotrexate for arthritis. I myself have noticed a big difference in total joint pain relief with glucosamine, but it took a year to see any results.
