I am a 51 year old female. I was diagnosed with MG in 1993 after several years of trying to get a diagnosis. The medication your dad is taking is probably an immuno suppressant drug - I was on Azathiaprine (sp?) and it did wonders for me. Prednisone was awful for me, and the Mestinon drugs were not all that effective. In 1995 I had a "Thymectomy." This is major surgery, and very, very difficult. I was 45 years old at the time of the surgery - after 3 years I was in complete remission, and have had no treatment whatsoever since about mid-1998. I am not on any drugs for the MG although I developed a hypo-thyroid condition. I believe the treatment that was most effective was the Thymectomy. The Azathiaprine was also very good for me, although I understand that some people cannot take it. I remember it was also termed "chemotherapy." Good luck to your father. I hope he does as well as I did. At the present time I am working as a legal assistant full time and taking no drugs for the MG. Good Luck.
