Sue
I had the same thing happen to me only eleven years post gallbladder surgery. I was referred to a gastroenterologist after my liver function tests were up & down for more than a year. I also felt nauseous, very fatigued, and had severe right upper abdominal pain which went straight through to my back. My gastro Dr. had me go through all the barium tests, blood tests, and x-rays imaginable. He finally tentatively diagnosed me with sphincter of oddi dysfunction. This is the area where the pancreatic duct and common bile duct meet in the upper portion of the small intestine. This was cramping down and not allowing bile to enter my small intestine, making my blood tests abnormal and my other symptoms. I was finally diagnosed by sphincter manometry, which is when they go down with an endoscope and inject dye into the ducts and measure the pressure. My pressures were up in both ducts and a double sphincterotomy (cutting open the sphincter) and a pancreatic stent(tube) was placed to keep the pancreatic duct open. I still developed pancreatitis which was very painful and had to be put on morphine. I was hospitalized for two days, but was only off work for six. I had to go on a fat-free diet and plenty of liquids to rest the pancreas. This was very hard for me.. I still have some problems and am now again scheduled for another endoscopic retrograde pancreatography for a look-see to make sure the sphincterotomies have not scarred over. The best medicine is to find a good doctor who doesn't think it's all in your head...please e-mail me and let me know how you are doing... good luck, Sue
