Shingles are a result of the reactivation of the chicken pox virus that resides permanently in the body of anyone who has had chicken pox. Anything that stresses the immune system can trigger an attack. Many doctors use antiviral meds like Zorivax to try to shorten the course. I think Prednisone is sometimes used, too.
