You need to see a gastroenterologist. My husband was diagnosed with GERD about 4 years ago. He had been having trouble with heartburn for a long time. Eventually, he couldn't sleep at night because anything he ate or drank tried to come up while he was lying down. He spent nearly every night in his recliner. He wouldn't go to a doctor until the night he began to vomit blood. At first it looked like coffee grounds, but became more obviously blood each time he vomited. We ended up in the emergency room where they ran a scope down in his stomach to see what was causing the bleeding. He had been suffering long enough for the acids to cause like a chemical burn at the bottom of his esophagus. He was referred to a gastroenterologist who put him on Prilosec 2 times a day. It really helped! He was finally able to sleep in bed again, but he still has to watch what and when he eats. If he eats or drinks anything later than 6:00 PM, he will have trouble. Also he found that cutting out caffeine in all of its forms helps him a great deal. He was doing great while taking 2 pills a day, but our new prescription drug plan will not pay for more than 30 pills/month so he is only taking one pill/day now. It is still much better than without any medicine. He tried Prevacid and developed a lactose intolerance, and is now taking a generic form of Prilosec called Omeprazole 20mg. Please do not give up hope. I understand what pain you are having from watching my husband suffer for so long. Keep looking for the right doctor, one who knows how to treat acid reflux. Luck and prayers be with you.
