Most women feel better when they wake up with their new breast intact. The rule used to be one run of chemo just to make certain all the cells are destroyed. It is better to have one surgery and get it all done then go under the knife a second time. Anethesia is not without risk....also the or and the many nonsocomial infections...that is hospital acquired infections. My friend just had a mastectomy and reconstruction. She feels like she got a free tummy tuck in the process. Her spirits are wonderful...half the battle is feeling good about yourself and getting better. If you tumor was encapsilated and your nodes are free from cancer cells, it should not be a worry for you to have the reconstruction. I counsel patients everyday....recently another one of my patients was so sorry she didn't have the reconstruction done when she had her mastectomy...now she won't go back to have it done because of the down time all over again, more missed time from work and the risk of another surgery or infection. Have faith in your doctor and let him be the one to advise you....every case is different. Good luck. My prayers are with you and your family.
