My 85 year old mother has been diagnosed with hydropephalus. The surgeon suggested a shunt but admits it is successful in only about 3 out of 10 cases. He said when it is successful it often reverses some of the confusion . I am wondering what would happen if we did not put in a shunt. Would the fluid build up even more and what would be the result.
