Dear Heather, I can't help much, but I do know that emphysema can kill you. My Mother died from it and I also have it.It can take a long time depending on how strong your heart is and if you don t get too many bad infections. It can be treated. I have had it for 10 years now,but I am starting to get worse.Yor grandfather should get the radiation treatments if it will help his cancer.My best of luck to you and your grandfather.
