I had my first shunt put in at 6 months and am now 42 years old. Don't let the doctors convince you, or, more importantly your children that there is nothing wrong and imply that the headaches aren't there or not that bad. I have doubted whether the pain was "in my head" until reading message after message about no test results indicating a problem. My mom used to tell a story about arguing with my neurosurgeon when I had my first malfunction at 6 yrs. and I've had to argue for treatment ever since. I'm unable to get insurance so now I have to wait for an emergency anyway.
