Hi, I don't know if you have ever gotten any of my replies...I am also a san diegan mom of 15 year old autistic, formally PDD...I've posted several replies...but who knows if I'm doing this the right way? I'm in the Penasquitos area...If you haven't gotten any of my info yet... Day class is helpful, IF you have a great teacher and IEP group working WITH you. PUSD schools going through upheaval in special ed. BIG shortage of qualified teachers. Administration seems clueless. You must be the advocate for your child. Your child should NOT be picked on, the teacher MUST work with other staff members to integrate special ed kids into lunch, p.e. recess and general ed periods such as these. Don't let the school shut your child off in a corner!! Mt. Carmel High school has wonderful support for it's special ed students. lots of "regular ed" kids helping out in the classroom and taking the kids around the school. excellent program. My son is not diploma bound, but completion bound. make sure someone explains this to you now. your son should be middle school bound. IEP meetings should 100% cover all your questions, and remember....you have all the rights for your student. you can change his IEP at any time if you are NOT satisfied. BUT here's the catch... you have to call additional meetings, and bring up issues, and stay on top of the paper work, and make sure programs get followed through! Good Luck to you and your son... hope I have been of some help, would love to hear more from you!! :) Jo
