My mother and father found out in April that the son that they would have this October had Trisomy 18 syndrome. I was devastated. I am 16 now, and I didn't know much about the disorder. I researched as much as I possibly could and found that there was a slim to none chance of survival. T18 isn't caused by environmental surroundings or even anything to do with intercourse. It is a genetic trait found in either the sperm or the egg. It didn't develop over time, either. One of you had the disfunctional cell when you were born. It is no one's fault. It's just a fluke of nature. I am sincerely sorry that this happened. I know, second hand, the tragedy involved. The only hope is that there is a 0.01% chance that this will ever happen to you again. It was just pure bad luck.
