You have my utmost sympathy for the terrible situation both you and your father are experiencing. If you have healthcare power of attorney, you can refuse to allow the surgery you feel will not be helpful and will just cause your father more pain. Even if you don't, you have every right to try to talk the doctors out of the surgery. I refused a foot amputation for my mother when she suffered a stroke prior to the surgery and it was a blessing to just let her go. I made sure she was snowed with morphine by sleeping by her bed and timing her pain meds. Someday our society will have to deal with end of life issues in a more compassionate way, I hope. Wishing you the best. Diana
