My daughter was in a car accident and wa also in a coma for about a week. but when she came out of it, didn't know us or much of anything. She was so jumbled up in all ways. Very childlike although 18 at the time. It took quite a long time but it has been five years and she is in college now. Some things have never returned to her. We lost the girl we once had and now love the new one. We played memory games and card games with her and when she asked if she knew how to do something we said yes. Sometimes this was enough for her to somehow automatically do it. One thing we did not know for quite some time was that she could not smell (very closely linked to memory) so could not taste right either. did not know what foods she liked, etc. Still does not always realize she needs to eat more. Her math skills were somewhat lost. The problem was that she did not know what she did not know until confronted with the problem. The hardest part is to get them to be cooperative enough to let you help them relearn skills. If you want to e-mail me more about this my address is theschoffstalls@juno.com. Sincerely, Lucy
