I also have this problem, although it is 90% in my feet. It is a sharp, sudden pain, lasting only a second or two. I also have varicose veins in my leg, it is the left one. I am a diabetic and my doctor has said my feet are fine, even though there are times it feels like their is no padding on feet and I am walking on the bones of my feet. It is painful and makes it difficult to enjoy some things. My diabetes is 8.1(HA1C), as of July of this year, not terrible. I don't seem to get any clear answers to my problem either.
