Saw your message today as I have just been diagnosed with autoimmune hepatitis. Did your blood tests show anti-smooth muscle antibodies? - they would also have done an antibody titer to see just how much antibody of this type is in your blood. This test (if positive), combined with the elevated liver enzymes is diagnostic for autoimmune hepatitis. As to prednisone - well, it will eat up your bones but if your symptoms are bad enough I guess the treatment is worthwhile. Remember, once those bones go only a few can be replaced with implants - and these often don't work well.
