I have Piraformis Syndrome and have had it since May of 2000. I am an outside rep so that means that I am driving in my car all day. Stress is definitely something that aggravates this condition. For me, it was finding ways to relieve this stress. I too went to many doctors. What helped me was taking muscle relaxers, walking to relieve stress, stretching everyday in the shower with the hot water on me, massages, etc. The most important thing is that she listen to her body and when she feels as if she has to get off her feet, she should sit down. I might even recommend that she seek some counseling. Lastly, she might want to explore Botox Injections. There is a doctor in NY named Lauren Fishman. He has been doing research on Piraformis Syndrome for the last 10 years. I believe he has a website called Sciatica.org. I was supposed to visit him on September 12, after the WTC but obviously did not go. I did not reschedule because I have made a tremendous amount of progress over the past few months. I feel for your daughter. This pain can be unbearable but she still has to live her life. It was very difficult for me because I am an extremely active person. I am happy to say that I am back doing many of the activities that I did prior to my injury. I must be very careful because every now and then I have a bad day and I am reminded that I have this condition. Another thing...the chair that she sits on is something to be very conscious of. To this day, I have a difficult time sitting on anything that has a cushion...a sofa, a chair with pillow seats, a booth in a restaurant. I am much better sitting on flat surfaces, preferably with a back for support. She needs that little round lumbar pillow if she does not have it. I usually bring it with me when I work in my office.
