                        I will not attempt to discuss all the various inherited retinal dystrophies; this condition affect the photoreceptors of the retina leading to loss of central acuity (usually around 20/200).  Of course genetic counseling and training from a facility dealing with visually impaired children is important.  However, I would urge you to seek the services of a competent low vision specialist.  This clinic should help greatly to establish a proper program for vision rehabilitation.  The child is not blind and should be treated as a partially sighted individual for whom much can be offered in low vision technology
