Adult Tonsilectomy

mike- I am a 26 yr old woman, who had a tonsilectomy dec. 5th 2002-if you havent had the surgery yet-or even if you have-heres an idea what it's like. i had it done due to the fact that I was a carrier for strep-every 30 days like clock-work.i would get sick. now the only anti-biotic that works for me is augmentin-which is about as big as your thumb. anyway-i ASKED my doctor to get it done-I was missing work constantly-my quality of life was awful, always tired,i just never felt good- and if i ever ran myself a bit too ragged-I would get strep again-doctors thought about a tonsilectomy when i was younger-but it wasnt the "in" surgery at the time. i got alot of ear infections and strep as a child-my tonsils would scare every nurse or doctor that would look-they looked like red golf balls-eew.... so when i was in the waiting room before surgery,i am surrounded by toddlers-waiting for the same thing, or to get tubes in their ears. little did i know that those kids were gonna bounce back much, much faster that i would. its rough afterwards, just all-over-icky. its the best way to desribe it. sleep michael, sleep. because when your awake it hurts. the first week its not so bad. the second week or so is when your calling the emergency room asking if your going to die. they worry about the scar site--you are supposed to monitor your bleeding-and do this. you have to start all over again if you do bleed too much, but be safe. also becareful with your pain meds-they will be liquid-some bubblegum antibiotic, and some nasty vicadin. guess who found out they were allergic to vicadin? i really recommend you talk to the doctor before-hand,vomiting isnt ever fun, but it will make you cry during these times. ice water is your best friend, it feels good, and helps clear your throat. anything carbonated, or anything too thick- ice cream or pudding is alot of work to swallow-but if it works-it works! all in all i was out of work for 3 weeks or so-5 pounds lighter from my forced liquid diet. but now i feel so much better, and havent been sick since then. i would do it all again- if you can get the time off-and you really have to rest until you heal!!! i would ask your doctor more questions- my company even paid me-under short term disability. so it worked for me, i hope whatever you choose works for you.
