Severe Sciatica

Hello, I am an athletic trainer and have dealt with a very similar situation. I too, do not think that it is fair for a doctor to say that just because you are young you need to deal with the pain. However, there are many things that can be done to help the sciatica problem. You can take an over the counter anti-inflammatory such as ibuprofen. Take it on a regular basis for awhile until the sciatica settles down. It is really important for you to determine why you are having sciatica. I do not know how much your doctor has told you about the condition, but it can be caused by a variety of things. If you have a disc related problem that is pushing on your sciatic nerve, back extension exercises can help a lot. Make sure that you are not picking things up using your back...use your legs instead. If your sciatica is caused by a tight piriformis muscle, stretching can help. Also, it helps not to stay in one position too long. Sitting can make it worse, so avoid prolonged sitting if possible. I recommend searching out a physical therapist or athletic trainer in your area to get all the exercises that you can do. They really do help! Good luck!
