You may be refering to porphyria. There are several porphyria's. Mine is porphyria cutania tarda which is caused by a defective enzyme in the liver. You are frequently not aware of the problem unles something trigers the it like alcohol or taking a medication like Prempro or some other estrogen, sedative, antidepresant, or some antibiotics. It causes a strange set of symptoms: dark urine, hair on face, tan looking skin, thick covered fluid blister like areas on skin of hands which otherwise is very fragil, and fatigue. Diagnosis is by 24hr urine. The treatment is bloodletting! Without complication this puts it back into remission.
