I need some help. I'm a college student and in my psycology class we have a project which is a debate on whether or not alcoholism is a disease. All the research I have done only says that alcoholism is a disease. I disagee, but I can't find any hard facts/opinions that agree with mine. I feel that it is your choice to drink. Drinking leads to alcoholism. It may become a problem like drug addiction. Is drug addiction a disease? Cancer, diabetes, lupus and the such are diseases. Does alcoholism fit in the same category? Alcoholism is defined as continued or compulsive use of alcohol drinks, or a chronic progressive potentially fatal psycological and nutritional disorder associated with excessive and usu. compulsive drinking of ethanol and characterized by frequent intoxication leading to dependence on or addiction to the substance. No where in the definition does it say it is a disease, so I think that saying that it is a disease just rationalizes the problem. To start drinking is a choice. One may have seen drinking growing up and decided that they too were going to drink when they grew up. It's all a choice. Smoking isn't a disease, yet in essence is the same as drinking in that once you start it is difficult to stop. How come it isn't a disease? It is also an addictive habit. Does anyone out there agree with me?
