Dear Dawn
My daughter is a selective mute. She is ten years old now, and still finds many social situations very difficult. I read a book on Selective mutism a few years ago, and knew almost immediately that this is what my daughter suffered from. We have tried play therapy, using puppets etc with a play therapist, but it didn't work. I'm a little worried now as she starts secondary school this September, and am not sure how she is going to cope. My daughter was assessed by an Educational psychologist at school when she was six. Maybe you could go down this line. It's very frustrating and worrying at times as a mum. I'm not sure if your daughter has selective mutism as you will from what you say talk in certain social situations. There are some good websites you could look on. Sue - England.
