At the moment the treatments are only available to certain groups, mainly those with H.I.V and CMV and those with surpressed immunity, I have heard of a very few cases where very young babies that are very ill because of cmv have been treated with "ganciclovir", most drugs are still really being trialled and have been found only to be effective while being taken, they can not cure cmv as once you have cmv you have it for life and they can not undo the damage already done by cmv. Work is being done to develop a vaccine to be given all children to prevent cmv. cmv is the most common virus present at birth but most go unnoticed because very few have any problems because of it and between 80-95% of the population will have cmv by the age of 40. I have spent 3 years reasearching cmv after our daughter was stillborn because of it.
