My son Ryan was born w/ CMV and had symptom at birth. He was put on ganciclivir at 11 days old and just now (at 22 month) quit taking it. He has mild-moderate hearing loss in one ear in all tones and a very mild loss in the other ear w/ just high tones. The ganciclivir did stop the virus from shedding and there has been no further hearing loss while on the medicine. He just came off of it Feb 28th so we will see what will happen to his hearing. The point to giving him the medicine at such an early age was in hopes to slow down (and hopefully stop) any further hearing loss. A lot of children end up profoundly deaf in their first year.
