SPONTANEOUS PNEUMOTHORAX

Daryl

Message 7 of 20 Previous Next

Hi Camille. It's Daryl. I wrote the original message. Thanks for your reply. I heard reoccurance rates in the neighborhood of 20-25%, maybe as high as 30%. If you "have" a reoccurance than the odds go up to 50%. Did your lung heal on it's own? did they treat it with a chest tube? How long were you in the hospital? Were you at rest when it happened,or were you hiking up a mountain. Our son is a cross county runner at high school, they were warming up, not doing heavy running. Although it typically happens in young, thin, athletic, tall men (more men than women). Our son in not tall, but thin, and athletic. He's a senior and wants to go to Mexico for spring break, but the medical is an issue for us. His only real restrictions are no scuba, no skydiving. His lung did heal on it's own, after 1 week. He did not need the surgery.. I heard if you do need the surgery, that usually does reduce your odds of it happening again. Of course, the reoccurance rates are prob. somewhat subjective, and maybe different for different age groups. I suppose time will heal your hurt about not being able to be alone in the mountains, there are worse things to have to deal with. Stay strong. Hang in.
