I'm 45 years old and got my tonsilectomy one week ago. I have to tell you that having read these posts beforehand, I was pretty scared. Don't be. For me, it was not a horror story at all. "Worst, most horrific, terrible pain ever??" No way! It's essentially a bad sore throat - similar to strep throat without the sickness. Yeah, without medication it hurts and is hard to swallow. But with medication it's not bad at all. I drank lots and lots of bottled water. I think I'm starting to get a little better each day now too. I got my tonsils out along with a uvulaplasty as treatment for sleep apnea WHICH IS NOW COMPLETELY GONE!!! I'm sleeping better than ever. Don't be afraid of this surgery if you need it. Here are some keys: 1) I had lots of friends praying for me and I'm not going to discount this for my rapid recovery. 2) Popsicles are wonderful! 3) Be prepared to have more solid food than everyone says. I was eating soft roast beef chuncks the day after surgery. I now want thicker, chunckier soups than thinner broth soups. 4) A fantastic wife who loves to take care of you always helps. 5) Tetracaine lolipops are good - numbs the mouth and throat only. 6) Liquid Hydrocodone is the best painkiller - you can function and think but it makes you much more comfortable. My doctor also prescribed Percocet but it's much stronger and I've never taken it because Hydrocodone is all I need. In summary, this was not a terrible ordeal for me at all. But I'm glad I thought it might be because I've been pleasantly surprised.
